SSAT and Research Foundation of the ASCRS Joint Research Award

Deadline: February 17, 2017 Online Application

The SSAT/Research Foundation of the ASCRS Joint Research Award

Purpose
This award is designed to assist in the development of young faculty members of the SSAT and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) who want to develop an active research program in colorectal diseases. Specifically, this is designed to support research that is focused on diseases of the lower intestinal tract, including but not limited to, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, or benign conditions of the lower GI tract. The goal of this project is to foster stronger fellowship between these two Societies through greater scientific collaboration and more comprehensive young faculty mentorship.

The $50,000 annual award will be equally supported by SSAT and The Research Foundation of the ASCRS (The Research Foundation). The second year of funding will be conditional on submission and presentation of a progress report at the end of the first year of funding, which will be reviewed and approved by the research committees of both the SSAT and The Research Foundation. It is expected that the recipient submit an abstract arising from his/her jointly funded research for presentation consideration at the SSAT and/or ASCRS annual meeting(s), as well as manuscripts to either the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, the official journal of the SSAT, or Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, official journal of ASCRS, for publication consideration. The society will work with the recipient at the conclusion of the jointly funded research to determine which meeting(s) and Journal(s) s/he will be submitting.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The award is restricted to surgeons who have completed formal clinical training in general surgery and are faculty appointed in a department of surgery at a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education in the United States or by the Committee for Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools in Canada, or the equivalent national accrediting body for applicants from other countries. In addition, if an investigator has received a similar type career development award from another organization such as the American College of Surgeons, American Surgical Association Foundation, etc., s/he will be ineligible for the joint SSAT/Research Foundation Award. This is the applicant's responsibility to notify the respective societies of potential funding conflicts. The award may be used to support any form of research infrastructure (research assistants, data analysts, etc.), purchase of large administrative datasets necessary for conducting research, education/formal training in clinical research/biostatistics, and principal investigator salary support to ensure protected research time. No portion of the award is to be used for institutional indirect costs.
