Advanced Training in GI Surgery

SSAT Complex Gastrointestinal Surgery Fellowship Certificate Program
Thank you for your interest in applying to the SSAT Complex Gastrointestinal Surgery Fellowship Certification Program.

All fellowship trainees completing Fellowship Council sponsored Complex Gastrointestinal Surgery (CGS) Fellowships are eligible and encouraged to apply for certification. In addition to this, scholarly activity, attendance at society meetings and participation in the SSAT CGS Fellowship Grand Rounds are included in the review process. The intended outcome is to engender a robust sponsorship that reflects the merits of our fellows and can be used in supporting the credentialing process as they transition to attending surgeons.

The application portal will be open in August of each year.

Application reviews will take place in September each year by the SSAT CGS Fellowship Certificate Committee. Fellows who are awarded the certificate will be notified electronically with a confirmation letter. Formal printed certificates will be mailed to the address provided on the application form.

If you have any questions about this process, please contact Bev Hendry.

Foregut Fellowship Certification Program from AFS, ASMBS, SAGES
The Foregut Fellowship Certification Program is sponsored by the American Foregut Society (AFS), American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT).

This certificate provides verification from the sponsoring societies that the fellow has completed all case requirements during their fellowship and has been active and contributing to the larger surgical field. It can be used to market the fellow’s specialized training and skills to patients, hospitals, and referring physicians.

Fellowship Council

A Minimally Invasive Surgery fellowship is fast becoming the most coveted post-residency training position among surgical residents today. For a surgical resident, the career opportunities and subsequent clinical incomes are increasingly tied to the ability to procure post-residency MIS training. Some have already discovered how difficult it is to secure a MIS fellowship, experiencing vulnerability and lack of direction through the process. To address this and other related needs, a group of MIS and Surgical Gastrointestinal Endoscopy fellowship directors organized to form the Fellowship Council (FC). The FC provides a communication forum for disseminating information about fellowship programs, discussing fellowship issues, and communicating the Council’s positions to other organizations. The Council will also establish criteria for implementing and enriching fellowship programs and standardizing the fellowship application and selection process.
