2014 marked another year wherein the SSAT Foundation was able to provide strong support for scholarship, education, and research in GI surgery. In 2015, the Foundation will award its first mentored research awards to help successful residents in their second year of work in an SSAT member's laboratory; we see this effort along with the more substantial Career Development Awards as a great investment to sustain the academic mission of the SSAT for the future. However, the need for novel mechanisms to support academic GI surgeons are greater than ever before. More... |
The history of the SSAT Foundation truly starts with the founding of the parent organization, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, which, to this day, remains the only North American organization focused on surgical problems of the entire alimentary tract. The SSAT Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. The Foundation was established in 2000 to help the Society achieve its ongoing mission: to stimulate, foster, and provide surgical leadership in the art and science of patient care; to promote and support the education and research of the diseases and functions of the alimentary tract; to provide a forum for the presentation of such research and educational endeavors; and to foster training and funding opportunities and scientific publications in support of these activities.
